Yesterday during a group gathering for the Memorial Day holiday, one of the many topics of conversation that came up involved a definition for what the group of friends I hang with call "mundanes".
One of the members of our group brought up the opinion that this is a very derogatory term and that we are hypocritical using it.
To be more specific, the majority of the group tends to define ourselves as "geeks" mostly because the majority of us have a strong interest in SciFi and or Tech. We also have had a histories of being the ones who were less popular in our school days, so our more discerning member was concerned that perhaps we are not really behaving any better than those folks were in those days and that we really are in denial of our own. Unfortunately, this member had to leave the gathering earlier than the rest of us and was unable to participate in further discussion.
However, as the evening wore on, some of us returned to the discussion and realized that perhaps we did not explain our definition as well as we really should have, and even came to a certain conclusion as we noted that the people we place in our non-mundane group are a larger sample of folks than previously mentioned. It was also noted that the initial definition of geek was also too narrow.
So here , as the final conclusion of the evening somewhat came to is the definitions of our groups as we saw them at that time. I'm sure there will still be room for discussion here and I will present here and I hope comments do Come.
Everyone is a geek about something because everyone obsesses about something, be it Sports, TV, Religion.
Mundanes are those who are not open minded and do not tolerate anyone who disagrees with anything they believe and are not open to or tolerant of anyone else's ideas.
This can fall into many different categories but especially those will deny that they could possibly fit the above Geek definition. In general, Sci Fan Fans, musicians, artists, and alternative faith folks seem to fall in the non Mundane category only because these are the folks who seem to be most willing to think outside the box and their world and most accepting of those who also do.
The so called mundanes are those who don't seem to be willing to accept other folks as they are without wishing to change them or have a problem with the fact that they may view the world differently than they do.
That's all I have to say for now.
Don't know anything about him. but he is coming...
Their was a soft sound and the Grinch turned around and then he saw
Little Cindy Lou Who who was no more than two.
"Santa Claus, why? Why are you taking our Christmas Tree?"
Well that old Grinch was so wily and quick, he thought up a lie and he thought it up quick.
"Well you see my dear, there is a light on this side that just won't light, so I'm taking it to my workshop.
I'll fix it up there and bring it back here."
Satisfied, the Grinch got her glass of water, patted on her on the head and sent her back to bed.
and when Little Cindy Lou was in bed with her cup he went back to the living room and stuffed the tree up.

I may not have quoted it exactly right, but that is the way things go sometimes.
"One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch, girl...." The Osmonds, 1970
The Osmonds are nice folks, but they are mistaken. One bad apple DOES spoil the whole bunch, and spreads the rotten to all.
The Month and a half of pleasantness is over.
I went home feeling sick again, and to parphrase another song " Mothers, don't let your babies grow up to be accountants. " Financial folks are the hated necessary evil. There is no fun to be gained or recognition.
Darth Vader is less evil.
Well, it's been 3 weeks since the Prior administration has left the building and my health and the health of most of my coworkers has improved.
Toxic envrioments create more harm than anyone imagines. Even those who we thought were coping well and we thought didn't have a problem are looking and feeling better.
I always heard hostile enviroment used as a term in the workplace for those who were worried about sexual harassment issues ( possibly inappropriate jokes and comments type things) well.... I think that's the kind of thing that is much easier to ignore and get over then the constant yelling and belittling that used to go on in my workplace.
Honestly, while I have still dreams of a more creative job at least I don't dread my current posting so much and at least don't mind going and doing it... Heck, it's been even pointed out that I am good at what I do.... Haven't heard that in years.
I just wanted to share the meaning of this to me.
It is a wonderful thing when you are at work on a Friday Afternoon and you don't mind it because you have had a pleasant week.
I 've been working hard, don't get me wrong, but for the first time in over 4 years I am working in a civil work envrioment.
No one has yelled, cursed, abused or thrown a tantrum.
The staff meeting this morning was pleasant with valuable discussion with no one being interrupted, put down, or just told to shut up.
I actually said something at the meeting and didn't want to cry at my desk afterwards.
I may actually be happy staying here for the rest of my work career.
Time will tell, but it's a good start.
We got the Sunshine in our hands we got the sunshine in our hands we got the sunshine in our hands now let it shine all over this land.
Continuing from yesterday....
Well the snow waited til today to come. and its snowing... and snowing.... and snowing...... and snowing.....
and to think that on the top of the DVD pile is "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" and "It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown"
I think "White Christmas" might be more appropriate now.
Snow... Snow.... Snow.... I'll be washing my hair in snow.
An interesting phenomenon.
K-HITS radio here (commercial rock station) for their daily Jokes on You segment played Star Trekkin' by the Firm.
Song famous for being played on Dr. Demento. It's been a favorite of my Star Trek Fan Group for many years, but I don't believe I've ever heard it on commercial radio before.
Well it's a fun way to start a day that is supposed to turn rotten weather wise later.
Man, 70+ degrees yesterday and the largest snow storm of the year scheduled to begin today.
Around here, they are right if you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes and it will change.
You make some very valid points, and yes, I agree it's best to criticize the actions not the person. Of... read more
